Explanation of Book Condition categories used by us:
New:
A new book. A brand new, unused, unread copy in perfect
condition. The only defects that may be present are those
created during the binding of the book and even those will be
mentioned if significant.
As new (or Like new):
A book that appears to be new displaying only mild evidence that
it has been read (e.g.. small creases in spine of soft covers,
edge wear of dust jacket in hard covers etc.). Clean pages
without marks or folds, tight spine. A book that is suitable as
a gift.
Very Good:
A copy that has been read and may have been read several times
but is still in excellent condition. The spine is firm and
undamaged; all pages are intact but may have bookmark folds and
mild age discoloration. Mild edge wear, bumped corners, mild
scuffing and creases in cover or dust jacket may also be
present, these, if present and regarded as significant, will be
detailed in individual book description above. There are no notations, underlining or highlighting.
Good:
A book that has been read but is still in good condition. Spine
may be creased or worn but is still firm, all pages and dust
jacket (where applicable) are intact but may be aged (toned and
foxed). Some edge wear of cover and jacket, cover or jacket may
be creased and scuffed or bumped. Small edge tears may be
present in dust jacket.
Fair:
A worn book that has complete text pages (including maps or
plates) but may have some pages clipped to remove previous
owners name. The spine may no longer be firm or hinges may be
very worn but there are no loose or missing pages. Pages could
be discoloured (aged)
but not to the extent that the book is unreadable. Jacket is
missing or in poor condition.
Poor or Reading Copy:
A book that is so worn that its only merit is the complete text,
which must be legible. It may not have a dust jacket but will
have all relevant pages, maps and plates. May be soiled,
scuffed, stained, highlighted, notated, spotted and may have
loose joints, hinges and pages. We will only offer for sale rare
or out of print books in this condition and then only if we
suspect that better copies are no longer available.
Defects
that should always be mentioned:
Underlining,
Highlighting,
Notations, scribbles or marks,
"From the library of" labels, names in flyleaves or title page,
dedications etc.
Torn, clipped, missing or loose pages,
Any significant deviation from above condition category.
