Explanation of Book Condition terms used by us: 

New:
A new book. A brand new, unused, unread copy in perfect condition. The only defects that may be present are those created during the binding of the book and even those will be mentioned if significant.

 As new (or Like new):
A book that appears to be new displaying only mild evidence that it has been read (e.g.. small creases in spine of soft covers, edge wear of dust jacket in hard covers etc.). Clean pages without marks or folds, tight spine. A book that is suitable as a gift.

 Very Good:
A copy that has been read and may have been read several times but is still in excellent condition. The spine is firm and undamaged; all pages are intact but may have bookmark folds and mild age discoloration. Mild edge wear, bumped corners, mild scuffing and creases in cover or dust jacket may also be present. There are no notations, underlining or highlighting.

 Good:
A book that has been read but is still in good condition. Spine may be creased or worn but is still firm, all pages and dust jacket (where applicable) are intact but may be aged (toned and foxed). Some edge wear of cover and jacket, cover or jacket may be creased and scuffed or bumped. Small edge tears may be present in dust jacket. Pages can include limited highlighting and notes but these must not affect readability of the book. May include “From the library of” labels or a name, initials or dedication.

 Fair:
A worn book that has complete text pages (including maps or plates) but may have some pages clipped to remove previous owners name. The spine may no longer be firm or hinges may be very worn but there are no loose or missing pages. Pages could be discolored (aged). May include highlighting and notations but not to the extent that the book is unreadable.

 Poor or Reading Copy:
A book that is so worn that its only merit is the complete text, which must be legible. It may not have a dust jacket but will have all relevant pages, maps and plates. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, highlighted, notated, spotted and may have loose joints, hinges and pages. We will only offer for sale rare or out of print books in this condition and then only if we suspect that better copies are no longer available.

64mo - up to 3" or 8cm tall

48mo - up to 4" or 10cm tall

32mo - up to 5" or 12cm tall

24mo - up to 5 3/4" or 13cm tall

16mo - up to 6 3/4" or 15cm tall

12mo - up to 7 3/4" or 18cm tall (this is the size of most mass market paperbacks)

8vo - up to 9 3/4" or 23cm tall (most hard covers are this size as are the trade paperbacks)

4to - up to 13" or 33cm tall

Folio - up to 15" or 38cm tall

Most coffee table books are either 4to or Folio size as are many glossy cook books.

Elephant Folio - up to 23" or 58cm tall

Atlas Folio - up to 25" or 63cm tall

Double Elephant Folio - up to 50" or 127cm tall

We use our best endeavours to ensure that the description of the condition of the books and other items offered for sale is accurate and complete at the time of listing. We take pride in ensuring that the book/s that you have purchased are at least as good or better than described but if we miss a defect and did not include it in our description of condition please contact us at your earliest convenience to remedy the oversight.
